Michelle began skating at an early age and progressed quickly, but in 1993 she had to go behind her former coach, Frank Carroll's, back to take the test to move up to the senior level.

Michelle finished 6th at her first senior U.S. National Championships in 1993 and 8th at her first World Championships in 1994.

 After finishing second at the U.S. Nationals in 1994 she was sent to the Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway as an alternate.

Michelle won her first U.S. National title in 1996 and her first World title the same year.

In 1998 at the Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan, Michelle finished second to teammate Tara Lipinski, and took home the bronze medal at the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah.
